Quote of the Week

"In principle, I do not favor Congressional involvement in the execution of U.S. foreign and military policy. I have seen its perverse effects in many cases. The conflict in Iraq is different. Over the past couple of years, the President has let it proceed on automatic pilot, making no corrections in the face of accumulating evidence that his strategy is failing and cannot be rescued. Thus, he lets the United States fly further and further into trouble, squandering its influence, money, and blood, facilitating the gains of our enemies. The Congress is the only mechanism we have to fill this vacuum in command judgment."

Lt. General William E. Odom, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Ernest Partridge:

NEW:   Liberals and Libertarians. Libertarianism, once a fascinating intellectual diversion and challenge, has become a menace in this new century. Proving libertarianism wrong and immoral is not difficult. However, removing the libertarians from power and repairing the damage that they have caused, will be horrendously difficult. And there is no guarantee that these efforts will succeed.

REPRISE:  The Public Interest and the Limits of Volunteerism.  Libertarians often tell us that personal voluntary restraint and charitable contributions are morally preferable solutions to social problems than government coercion and taxation. The trouble is, in numerous and significant instances, volunteerism doesn’t work.

Conscience of a Progressive.
A Book in Progress

Bernard Weiner:

NEW:    The  Roots  of  Disaster: Impeachment As Remedy.  Here's the historical roadmap for how the U.S. wound up in Disasterville in Iraq. CheneyBush won't relent in their policies, their coverups, their corruptions. Impeachment is the only available remedy to restore sanity abroad and respect for constitutional law at home.

REPRISE: Bush's Inaugural Address After a Spritz of "B.S. Away!"  The "B.S. Spray" permits us to hear the unvarnished truth. Bush's second-term plans are laid out, and they ain't pretty. And the Bush Bunker Crew has pretty much kept to the script during the past two-and-a-half years. Ouch! (First published January 18, 2005)

NEW:  Ernest Partridge's Blog:   A Crisis Papers reader takes issue with my dismissal of "cold fusion."  An exchange ensues between the critic and a professor of physics, with a few additional comments by this blogger.

Bernard Weiner's Blog:  The oxygen of hope for the left, Nancy Pelosi makes her first moves as Speaker, an Iraq prediction comes true, and the Falcon Base disaster outside Baghdad that the media never reported. It's blog time again!  (12/12/06)
